Former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, has decried the antics
of fifth columnists within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),
especially in Enugu East Senatorial District, and advised party members
to be watchful and not relent until victory is achieved.
Addressing a huge crowd of supporters at the PDP campaign rally held
yesterday at the headquarters of Enugu South Local Government Area of
the state, Nnamani said PDP members, who left the party and those
working against the party from within, could destroy the party if not
checked.
He condemned those who claim to be loyal to the party but at night,
work for the opposition and even go the extra mile to finance the
campaign of those who left the party.
He urged supporters not to be deceived by claims that those who left
the party were working for the PDP guber candidate, insisting that the
PDP in the state had no understanding with any other party in the state.
Nnamani described Enugu South Local Government Area as a fortress for
the PDP having produced the likes of himself and Senator Jim Nwobodo,
adding that the good works of Governor Sullivan Chime had made it easy
for the party to coast to victory in the forthcoming elections.
Also speaking, former governor of old Anambra State, Senator Jim
Nwobodo, described Enugu State as sure victory for the PDP in the
contest for all positions during the forthcoming elections.
He said PDP had no opposition in Enugu State in the forthcoming
elections and warned all members of the PDP that left the party to
contest elections in other political parties, that they were merely
wasting their time.
The former governor expressed confidence that the governorship
candidate of the party, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, would continue with the good
works of Governor Chime, having distinguished himself as a true member
of the PDP and three-time member of the House of Representatives, who
had held important portfolios including his current position as
Chairman, House Committee on Marine Transport.
In his speech, Ugwuanyi thanked all the stakeholders of the party,
especially the delegates that voted for him during the governorship
primary election and assured them of his resolve to continue with all
the policies and programmes of Chime’s administration for the overall
interest of the state.
Group advocates violence-free polls
Following the postponement of the general elections, a political
group under the auspices of “Orji Kalu Support Group” has called on the
electorate to resist any form of intimidation and rigging in the
forthcoming polls.
The National Coordinator of the group, Mazi Abel Ugo, made the call
in Umuahia at a press briefing on the postponement of the elections.
He said: “It is time for us to collectively elect credible people
into leadership positions. Nigeria deserves good leadership and this can
only be achieved when we vote people based on merit. Gone are the days
of shortchanging the will of the electorate by rigging and manipulating
results. This is the time to make Nigeria great again.
“The postponement will give the Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) and security agencies the opportunity to double up
their activities. We need to scale down aggressively the distribution
channels, so that everyone can have access to their permanent voter
cards, especially in places, where the majority of the people have not
received theirs.”
On security challenges, Ugo urged the armed forces, the police and
other security agencies to work as a team, “ by deploying a joint task
force to trouble spots and potential flash points of violence in order
to maintain peace.”
The coordinator noted that President Jonathan has promised a level
playing field for all political parties, saying this should remain
paramount in the minds of politicians.
The group, while admonishing politicians to play the game by the
rules, urged INEC officials not to connive with desperate politicians,
who see politics as do-or-die affair.
