FORMER governor of Oyo State, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, was, on Wednesday, adopted as the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Oyo State, ending speculations about his next political move after a controversial Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries.
Alao-Akala, who was adopted at a well-attended special congress of the party, held at the Olubadan Stadium in Ibadan, announced Alhaji Sharafadeen Alli as his running mate for 2015 election.
He was adopted after the five other governorship aspirants in the party announced their withdrawal from the race.
That the aspirants who withdrew from the race were Alhaji Alli, Mr Nurudeen Akinyo, Mr Tunji Sadeeq, Mr Kazeem Adedeji and Mr Olu Abiala.
The motion for the adoption of Alao-Akala was moved by Mr Lowo Obisesan and was seconded by Alhaji Musibau Popoola, from Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, before it was finally ratified by the congress.
Speaking on the reason for their withdrawal from the race, the aspirants, in their separate speeches, hinged it on their obedience to party’s decisions.
Speaking after his adoption, Alao-Akala described the event as the beginning of another history in the political landscape of the state, saying they were on board to the promised land.
“The events of the recent weeks spurred us into taking this very bold step. A step that has put end to rumours and speculations within the political circle in Oyo State.
“I want to take you down the memory lane; no politician or group of people had ever been a monopoly of winning formula for elections till date. The indices keep on changing every season, even when our Chief Lamidi Adedibu was alive,” he said.
According to him, “this year, against all expectations, something unique and historical happened.
“That had always been the peculiarity of political algebra in Oyo State and this had continually gone beyond any human ability or permutation.”
The former governor said previous administrations from the time of the late Chief Bola Ige to the current administration, the formula had never been the same.
“In preparation for 2015 elections, we set out to actualize our ambition on our old mat, but God has another plan for us. Here we are on a marble, the Rehoboth, without stress, amidst honest and reliable people.
“I want to reiterate it that we never planned to leave the PDP. We were not chased out either, but it was evident that the current leadership of the party had forgotten that politics is not the same as election.
“It has resolved to satisfy the minority and gamble with the lives of millions because of an inordinate ambition,” he said, adding that the new party was full of election marshals of note and not chess player.
“We knew nobody from the top, but we are heirs of the Top man, God Himself, because His own list cannot be doctored anywhere,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mr Akinyo was adopted as the LP senatorial candidate for Oyo South; Mr Olu Abiala for Oyo Central and Mr Tajudeen Adigun for Oyo North.
In a related development, Team Akala, a support group for the return of Chief Alao-Akala, described the adoption of Alao-Akala as the governorship candidate of LP as a development that will translate to victory for the party in 2015.
The team also commended the five governorship aspirants who stepped down for the former governor for their spirit of sportmanship and understanding, particularly towards enhancing the development of the state in 2015.
In a press statement signed by the chairman, Board of Trustees of the group, Dr Kola Balogun and the coordinator, Niran Adeyoju, it further said that the crowd that greeted the occasion affirmed that the people of Oyo State were really behind Chief Alao-Akala.
