IBADAN—STUDENTS of the University of Ibadan, UI, threw civility to the wind, yesterday, as they trooped out of their campus and attacked some journalists who were there to cover their protest over the death of one of their colleagues at the institution’s health centre.
Among the journalists attacked was Mr. Sola Adeyemo, New Telegraph’s correspondent, who had his shirt torn into shreds by the rampaging students. They also robbed him of his phones, including a blackberry Z3.The students were protesting the death of their colleague, Mayowa Alaran, a 200 level student of the Department of Kinetics, who was said to have developed some complications while watching football at the Independence Hall.
They alleged that the deceased student, who was said to be asthmatic, died as a result of neglect by health officials at Jaja Clinic because he could not produce his identity card.
Reacting, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Oladejo, said the students had been advised earlier in the day to do whatever they wanted within the purview of the law.
According to him, there is no way the management can say the attack was carried out by the students because it happened outside the campus.
