THE dream of putting an end to the ill-activities of suspected Fulani
gunmen in Taraba State has no doubt hit the rock, as no fewer than six
soldiers have reportedly been killed and three others missing.
The attack, which took place yesterday between Amar and Kambari
communities in Karim-Lamido Local Council of the state, was suspected to
have been carried out by Fulani gunmen who ambushed the military men
who were on patrol in the area that shared common boundary with the
neighbouring Plateau State.
An eyewitness, who hails from the area, told The Guardian that the
soldiers, ambushed by the gunmen, “were nine in number”, adding: “As I
am talking with you now, six dead bodies of the soldiers had been found
while three others are still missing.
“My brother is one of the soldiers killed, so I am not in anyway
exaggerating at all.” Confirming the attack yesterday, chairman of the
council, Bobbo Bello Bendu, said: “ I have been reporting to the
appropriate authority about the security situation in my area.”
He said the people are presently living in fear because the soldiers
may embark on a reprisal attack. A military source, who also spoke with
The Guardian on telephone, said: “The news of the attack has reached all
the two barracks in the state.
I mean our men in both Takum and Sarti Barracks in Gashaka are
already aware of the development. “On the next line of action, I am not
in position to speak on that.
I am talking to you as a friend because I am not an authority in the
military to be quoted. But the truth is that we are not happy, and I
have the belief that those involved would surely pay for it.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joseph
Kwaji, said he was not in position to speak on issues relating to the
military. According to him: “Anything that is related to the military, I
am not obliged to make comment because I cannot speak on their behalf.”
