Ivanovic advances to Brisbane final

BRISBANE (Reuters) - Serbia's Ana Ivanovic battled her way into the final of the Brisbane International on Friday, beating American Varvara Lepchenko 7-6(2) 6-4.
Ivanovic, who came from a set down to win her previous match, once again had to dig deep before seeing off Lepchenko after nearly two hours on the Pat Rafter Arena.

Brothers' past draws scrutiny as French manhunt enters Day 3

PARIS (AP) — Investigators were scrutinizing the recent past of two brothers with al-Qaida sympathies and a place on the U.S. no-fly list as a manhunt for the suspects in the newsroom massacre at a satirical French weekly entered its third day Friday.
Police SWAT teams swarmed a region north of Paris, fearing a second strike by the suspects, who are described in a nationwide notice as "armed and dangerous."

Challenger Sirisena elected Sri Lanka's new president

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — In a stunning result that was unthinkable just weeks ago, the challenger to Sri Lanka's longtime president defeated his onetime political ally on Friday, signaling the fall of a family dynasty and the rise of former Cabinet minister Maithripala Sirisena.
Sirisena, who defected from the ruling party in a surprise move in November, capitalized on the outgoing President Mahinda Rajapaksa's unpopularity among this island's ethnic and religious minorities, as well as grumbling among the Sinhalese majority about his growing power and the country's economic troubles.

Thailand begins impeachment hearing against ousted premier

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand's military-appointed legislature began impeachment hearings Friday against former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, a move analysts say is aimed at ensuring the ousted leader stays out of politics for the foreseeable future.
The charges, dismissed by Yingluck's supporters as politically motivated, relate to her alleged role in a disastrous government rice subsidy scheme.
